New round of tuning is out, and we get a buff to SR.
20% more execute damage and 30% more physical. The reason this was implemented was to avoid SR dropping out of the single target rotation for DW and 2-hand frost, which was a danger with the strength of the buffs. That was mostly accomplished with this change. So, first things first, yet another look at the spec balance with this new change, and 4 bugs fixed since the last run.
Unholy is up a fair notch since last time, but so is DW frost. The ST gap widens even more between ST and 2-hand, which makes me think that at a competitive level, 2-hand will be all but useless. If DW offers better ST, better cleave, and better AE, why go 2-hand or unholy? Unless you CANNOT get weapons to drop.
Now, I say "mostly" accomplished. What I mean is there are still times when HB is better than SR, making SR useless. Those times are 2+ targets (should be no surprise there) OR when reaching a certain AP level. This is because SR has a massive base damage (60k), but HB has a higher DPAP (Damage per attack power, or attack power coefficient, which I hate spelling out). That AP apears to be around 130k for DW, which is PoF/FC/1 trinket. If all of that is up, it's better to use HB than SR, otherwise SR is better than HB. Tell me when has a way to monitor AP on your screen, and I'm sure WA does as well, and I'll make a guide on how to set that up later. Please note that this AP breakpoint only applies to DW frost, both 2-hand frost and unholy continue to use SR as before.
This was a bandaid fix to solve two problems, SR not being used by DW, and unholy's low damage. It did bump up unholy more than DW (the increase you see for DW is mostly my bufixes), and it did get DW to keep using SR, but in both respects it did not do it's job well enough. Now we need to track ANOTHER number using a third party addon to tell us which ability to use at a given time, and unholy remains too low to be viable. Other suggestions for fixes posted in #acherus were:
Giving frost and unholy rune cost for SR
Making SR shadowfrost
Lowering base damage and increasing DPAP for SR.
Both of these would stop readjustments from needing to be made whenever AP got high enough, and cement SR's role as our execute. As it stands, SR is only worth about 2k dps over not using it at all(for DW), which is about .7%, and hardly worth it. Executes are supposed to hit HARD, no?
Anyway, keep sending me trinket numbers as pet my last post so I can figure that nightmare out.
