Mastersimple vs. Mastercomplicated

Mastersimple

So, with 5.4 I named a new playstyle called mastersimple. The simple premise is that DW frost has a lot to worry about, and that it can afford to drop both SR and oblit out of it's "rotation" without losing a large, or even noticeable amount of dps. The core of DW becomes literally HB > FS > PS, which is both very easy to remember, and to actually execute with a large dragon breathing down your neck. In reality, you still need to worry about managing BT charges, PL, HoW, ERW, as well as "gaming" KM procs and properly manage runes and runic, so no one can claim that DKs have a "brainless" rotation. But, the option for a brainless rotation does exist, and should be taken advantage of by those learning the class, or even veterans of the class who need split most of their focus away from their rotation, for whatever reason.

So, here is a copy of what you should get for your default action list as DW frost.

To simulate mastersimple, first we take out the obliterate line, and add in a PS line. Thanks to the work done by Gendori over on MMOC, we know that the best place to add in PS is right at the very end, as a filler rated even lower than ERW.

Here are the lines we add in at the end.
actions.single_target+=/death_and_decay,if=unholy>0&buff.pillar_of_frost.down
actions.single_target+=/plague_strike,if=unholy>0

What this does is, if the sim can do NOTHING else, and you have at least 1 unholy rune, it will cast DnD (with pillar of frost down due to the 4-set proccing twice on PS and 0 times on DnD), or PS with that unholy rune.

That gives us an action list that looks like this, normal without oblit.
http://pastebin.com/7JDibM3j

Next we remove SR from the rotation, which is done by simply deleting the SR lines.

actions.single_target+=/soul_reaper,if=target.health.pct-3*(target.health.pct%target.time_to_die)<=35

actions.single_target+=/blood_tap,if=talent.blood_tap.enabled&((target.health.pct-3*(target.health.pct%target.time_to_die)<=35&cooldown.soul_reaper.remains=0))

Which gives us the final action list for mastersimple.

By copy and pasting these action lists to your gear profiles, you can find out just how much damage you'll lose (or gain) from mastersimple.

Now, to go into further detail about Gendori's work, he discovered that, under quite a few item setups at higher gear levels, removing obliterate from your rotation actually turned out to be a gain, and not a loss.

Mastercomplicated

By moving PS to the bottom of the rotation, despite wasting a significant amount of unholy runes, you gain more of a gain from wasting less frost and death runes, and gain more HBs, which means more cleave. For me, personally, taking obliterate off my bars was a gain, and I've been trying it out these past few days to get a feel for it. Damage has increased, by a very small amount, but I'm loving the keybind freed up by obliterate's departure. I also feel that the rotation is a little easier like this, and while the ST gain might be sutble at best, the AE gain (if you were not already doing this for AE) shows up in a noticeable way. I suggest simming yourself with both the normal and obliterate adjusted action lists, and giving this a try if it looks like a gain for you.

  1. Does this action list still use Obliterate when GCD capped?

  2. Hi Mend,

    First, thanks for your work ! Im waitin for this Update since Gendori posted :)
    I will try your new Rotation on Weekend for sure, but there is one Thing i dont get:
    Why did you take out SR from ST Rotation?? You mentioned it hits "like a weak noodle" but its still a DPS gain on ST. Thanks again

    1. The difference between mastersimple and mastercomplicated is just SR now, not oblit. Dropping SR out is still a loss, albeit a small one, but does simply the rotation by letting you drop another button. Whether you do mastersimple or mastercomplicated though, there is a point where you don't want to use obliterate anymore.

    2. Thanks for clearing this up :) So i stay with SR, and sim if taking out OB will be a gain.

    3. Hi again,
      i have another SR related Question. You mentioned that even with a low RuneRegen of 7.5 the Haste Buff from SR isnt worth it, as its a 1 Rune gain vs. 1 Rune spend + GCD. So im at 9.13sec actually due to the Haste changes,and if i understand your Math right
      (5/9.13 *3),it should give me +0.64 Runes and makes the Buff worth to get now. Please help me clear this up again :) Thanks

    4. Actually, it's 50% haste for 5 seconds, which is 2.5/(rune regen time)*3, which is 0.82 runes for you, despite the 1 rune cost.

    5. Thx for Reply,
      so if i understand you right, the Haste Buff is actually viable ? (Sry mate but english is not my main language) :)

    6. No, you want to avoid the haste buff. It breaks even, but still costs a GCD, a 7.5 rune regen, and gets worse with a longer rune regen. For it to be worth getting, you would need a rune regen time of around 5 seconds or less, which is impossible to sustain. It's meant to be a consolation prize, not something you want to try and get, just something that doesn't make SR a total waste if the target dies earlier than you expect.

    7. So it seems i misunderstood "despite" :) ..
      Thanks again for your help, and keep up the brilliant work !

  3. I came here to ask for your help. As a frost dk I have read and followed all your suggestions but I still feel that I am lower than I should be dps-wise. I hold about 140-150k single target on stand-and-kill fights, More on aoe of course. I want to bring as much dps to my raid group as I can! My toon is Slayerella on Hyjal server, US. If you have any advice I woul be thrilled to hear. -Laura

    1. The three things that lower your dps from "perfection" are gear, optimization, and rotation. Not much you can do about gear, so let's focus on the other 2. If you're not sure you're optimizing the gear you have correctly, try finding your own stat weights using simC, and plugging them into AMR or another reforging/gemming calculator. Take a look at the armories of some high rankings DKs, look at how they are optimizing their gear, and if it's different than you try to figure out why, but don't blindly copy anyone. What works for them may or may not work for you.

      For rotation, run yourself in simC and see how much DPS you are doing compared to how much you are pulling off on a fight like malkorok. If you're significantly lower, take a look at the % damage and cast number of each ability in your logs vs. simcraft, to see what you're using too much of, or too little of. On any particular fight, check out a high ranking parse with a similar time to your kill, and look at the ability breakdown.

  4. menderbarr, i made your BiS DW list on the wowhead and found that there is only 2365 hit rating on it, http://www.wowhead.com/list=445594/new-list#0-equipment-set

  6. Pure brilliance AAA+++

    I didn't get a minor dps increase. I got a 25k+ dps increase. So thank god I stumbled on this piece of exellence and i didn't still stay on the standard rotation.

    1. The magic to this is actually the insane amount of legendary cloak procs => KM procs. It's just brilliant. Haven't decided yet on SR tho, i'll run a simc to figure it out.

  7. hi mend great stuff thanks for all your hard work!
    Heres a question I cant really find out the answer to in regards to DW + the use of plauge leech:
    when using plague leech should i use it when i have all runes on cd with 1 unholy rune up so i can reapply blood plague right after i use plague leech or should I use it when I have all runes on cd so plague leech will turn the unholy rune into a death rune therefore giving me more HB but delaying my PS by about 6 seconds?

    thanks

    1. When using PL, you always want 2 runes of cooldown. It doesn't matter if an unholy rune is up or not. BP uptime isn't that important at all.

    2. hey mend another question for ya
      I got engineering and I was wondering how tightly should I use my glove tinker off cd? specifically I find that with 42 sec cd on POF after 3 POF I have a 6 second difference between POF and my glove tinker. So should I hold back my glove for POF or should I just constantly use it on cd? thanks!

    3. Both should be used on CD. Lining it up is nice, but never worth the reduced uptime as far as I can tell.

  8. I like obit, just so use to having it in to the rotation :) but im at a high enough gear level i think mastersimple may pull ahead. I know to copy and paste that last file you linked, but where exactly do you paste it at in simcraft?

    1. Start at the line
      "actions=auto_attack"
      and finish at the line
      "actions.single_target+=/empower_rune_weapon"

      Copy and paste the new profile over all that.

  9. Is there a pastebin link for the mastercomplicated profile?

    ReplyDelete
  10. hmm, for some reason when i copy & paste the list into simcraft under the simulate tab i get an error that says Unknown option "actions" with value "auto_attack" after i hit simulate? not sure why

  11. Just wondering why the line for rime is in the actionlist if oblit is removed? Also I'm freaking out. I usually am top dps in my raid, or top 1-3 and I do constant research and read your blog everyday and reading the mastersimple blog every day to make sure I'm not making a mistake, but I swear I'm doing SOMETHING wrong or it really is JUST gear and kill times. I would really really appreciate it if you could lend me another hand. And I don't know why I can't paste logs from my phone for some reason. I'll link as soon as I get home but if you were to look before then I'm Guido on Emerald Dream US in Celestial Rebirth.

  15. Sorry if this has already been asked before but in the Mastercomplicated rotation. Should I still be subbing out a PS (granted my Blood Plague has 6+ seconds left) for DnD or is PS still a greater gain. This is of course assuming the target is not moving and POF will not be up for the extra 4 set damage on PS. Thanks!

    1. Yes, DnD beats PS when PoF is down, even for single target. It's pretty small though.
